This article highlights "net.art", which is an art that got big right around when the internet started. Net artists developed cult like followings and it was a great community of artists who supported each other. At some point the net artists feared that the then uncluttered internet would become saturated by mainstream media - which they were right about. I think net art is a really cool way of expressing yourself, and the net artists discovered so many things while making art. I think the whole idea of creating art that is only supposed to be shown online is unique, and different. There were critiques of Desktop is and Form Art for being too restrictive in what you could do on the internet as far as net art. From the article, it seems as thought there was a lot of pressure on net artists to outdo themselves, and come out with divergent work.
I think there is a huge market for net art and everything surrounding digital art. It seems as though as it gained popularity, net artists started to capitalize and sell their work.
I like what they said at the end of the article about using mainstream media and what you can find around you to continue creating art. There was definitely a shift in net art when advertising became prominent and TV and the internet started to converge. Instead of working against it, digital artists must now find a way to work with it and create more art. Even as net art shifts more in the future, from web pages to apps to virtual reality, I think there is something really cool about those original net artists who found a new space to create in.
